AI description: The Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center website serves as a powerful digital platform for advocacy, education, and mobilization. Its purpose is to drive systemic change by highlighting issues of inequality and promoting human rights through legal action, education, and global awareness. The site functions as both an information hub for their various justice programs and a call to action for supporters to donate and get involved. The visual identity is bold, urgent, and unapologetically activist. Utilizing a high-contrast palette of deep blue, stark white, and striking red accents against monochromatic photography, the design commands attention. The heavy, typographic-driven hero sections use massive, sans-serif lettering to deliver punchy, manifesto-style messaging that resonates with a socially conscious and politically engaged audience. It is a masterclass in using editorial design to convey gravity and purpose.
"652b2caf-6370-41a9-935f-ed8e6e067db4","e35ba008-1343-483d-8fbe-0848680807ba","Non-Breaking Space","non-breaking-space-design-of-dissent","https://non-breaking.space/","https://non-breaking.space","2026-05-04T20:06:32.000Z",75,"2026-05-23T20:24:10.000Z","Non-Breaking Space — A not-for-profit design exhibition space by Civilization","While voting technically began in the US in 1776, it’s been a constant struggle for many populations to be able to actually vote. Over the course of three years, our studio curated, designed, and housed fourteen exhibitions and numerous public programs with Na Kim, Herman Miller, Bonnie Siegler, Scott Lindberg, and many others. Oftentimes the exhibitions and events coordinated with themes from our visiting lecturers as part of our Design Lecture Series. Many of the exhibitions interrogated graphic designs’ role in social progress, cultural dialogue, and consumerism. In 2020, following the brief opening of “AS, NOT FOR: Dethroning Our Absolutes – An incomplete historical survey of work created by African-American graphic designers over the last century” by Jerome Harris, COVID forced us to close the exhibition space to the public. In time, our studio made the decision to go fully remote, with our team spreading across the US and Europe. In this new era, our studio is now pursuing projects that reach new audiences by curating and designing exhibitions in other spaces, holding virtual events, and producing workshops and giving talks. Most recently, we collaborated with Tré Seals, founder of Vocal Type Co., on “Characters: Type + Progress.” The exhibition was on display at The Branch Museum of Architecture + Design in 2023 and will be at the Museum of Design–Atlanta in 2024. - The tenants advocated for their rights and in 2022, they won settlement in a discrimination case to remain in their long-time, rent-controlled homes without harassment. Our Work 4 individuals pose together for a photo next to a scroll of Chinese calligraphy. SPOTLIGHT 2002 Amid the heightened anti-immigrant discrimination and scapegoating following 9/11, Bay Area Filipino airport screeners were treated as security risks based solely on their lawful non-citizenship status. ALC, Filipino Advocates for Justice, and other community groups helped them organize and fight for their jobs back. News & Resources An overshot view of an airport check-in with many people in line carrying luggage. SPOTLIGHT 1982 With other local organizations, we sued the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services (the precursor to ICE) to stop illegal workplace raids in factories. As a result of the lawsuit, International Molders & Allied Workers Union Local 164 v. Nelson, the federal agency banned warrantless raids. Issues An empty factory showing machines, hardhats, and other equipment. SPOTLIGHT 1972 In one of our earliest cases, Chann v. Scott, we defended Chinatown youth against the San Francisco Police Department’s racially discriminatory dragnets. The successful class action lawsuit solidified our role as the country’s first legal aid organization focused on serving low-income Asian Americans.
